The hottest travel news right now is all about the price wars and the small public charter airlines that are emerging to profit by offering travelers extremely low air fares. The following public charter airlines are hitting the news.

Direct Air, based in Myrtle Beach, S.C., announced plans today to fly between Lakeland Linder Regional Airport and four destinations: Niagara Falls, N.Y., Hagerstown, Md., Springfield, Ill., and Myrtle Beach. The flights start June 23. The airline is offering $79 one-way fares on the new route through Saturday on its website (visitdirectair.com). Lakeland's airport hasn't hosted scheduled airline service since the late 1970s.
From 2006 to 2007, air taxi operator DayJet provided limited flights. In 2007, Direct Air launched flights from St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport to Myrtle Beach, Niagara Falls and Gulfport-Biloxi, Miss. Direct Air will fly the Lakeland routes with a Boeing 737-400 supplied by charter operator King Air, which moved its headquarters from California to Lakeland last year.

Sun Country Airlines based in St. Paul, MN announced that they have been selected by the U.S. Department of Transportation to serve Washington National Airport from Lansing, Michigan. The daily round trip flight will originate in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota and stop in Lansing before continuing onto Washington, D.C. Flight times and dates will be announced in the near future.

Sun Country will offer daily service featuring modern, fuel efficient, Boeing 737 aircraft with both First Class and Coach service from Terminal 2/Humphrey in Minneapolis/St. Paul to Washington National Airport. “This service will provide a great benefit to customers in both Minnesota and Michigan by providing a competitive low fare alternative. Sun Country will commence service December 22, 2010 to Orlando, Fort Myers, Las Vegas, Cancun and Montego Bay from the Capital Region International Airport.
In addition the Airline recently announced twice weekly service from Minneapolis/St. Paul to London Gatwick Airport commencing May 27, 2011 and operating through September 4, 2011.
They also launched a unique program called "Fall Free For All" a $499 pass, for 37 days unlimited travel to any domestic and international destinations this Fall. For the price of a single ticket on other airlines, Sun Country travelers can reserve their pass beginning August 16th to August 24th and use the Fall Free For All pass and have access to any coach-class seat available with no blackout dates. I think this is really a unique and smart idea that will prove to make money for this airline.

Vision, which is based in suburban Atlanta and started flying in December, has built its schedule to cover 24 cities in 14 states, almost all of them within 500 miles of its hub at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport. Until now, Vision has not gone farther West than Houston. The company's management has closely followed the template of Allegiant Air, operated by Las Vegas-based Allegiant Travel Co., which picks a resort city as the primary focus, then connects it to other cities with nonstop routes where other airlines previously required connections. The fares are set to undercut competitors, with some promotional seats being sold as cheaply as $19 one way, but with separate charges for other items. Vision Air Holdings, which started in 1994, has run charters to Gulf Coast casinos, Cuba and Afghanistan. Other divisions operate tours to the Grand Canyon out of the North Las Vegas Airport and sell vacation packages.

All 3 of these once charter airlines are starting to increase their momentum in capturing travelers with the excellent deals their offering and cutting the major airlines These airlines have found their niche and are really able to compete right now with the big guys given their strategy and pricing. Hooray for the little guy!!

Paris’s Museums and Cultural Sites

Because Paris has such a long history (the first permanent human habitations were founded around 4200 BC), it has many historical sites and museums worth visiting. Notre Dame, Paris’s most famous cathedral, was built in the 12th century on the Ile de la Cite, the island in the center of Paris which was also the site of its earliest settlements. Also on this island is the prison where Marie Antoinette waited out her execution during the French Revolution, the Sainte-Chapelle, and the Pont Neuf – the “new bridge” which is actually the oldest bridge in Paris.
For art lovers, Paris has several world-famous museums, including the Louvre – perhaps the world’s most famous museum, which holds the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo. Other landmarks worth visiting in Paris include the Napoleonic Arc de Triumphe, the Eiffel Tower, and the Bastille. Whether in Paris for business or pleasure, Paris apartments are the ideal accomodation for your stay. The unemployment rate is at an all time high, people are losing their homes and the cost of living is increasing everyday! It makes me furious when I call one of my creditors to discuss my account and I find the representative on the other end of the phone is difficult to understand. Why because the companies are outsourcing the jobs they have available to other countries. I think companies that do this to save a dollar should be fined. They should be giving jobs to US citizens that are out of work and well qualified. Banks were given large sums of money to fund programs to help consumers save their home and they do nothing but put the consumer through so many hoops that only about a 1/3 of the people that apply for help actually get it. Are you mad, I am! Tell me what gets you mad.Doreenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04845260758267624837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4220459860759480601.post-83934057069573517962010-07-08T02:28:00.000-05:002010-07-08T02:28:49.958-05:00Anthony Bourdain in UruguayDoreenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04845260758267624837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4220459860759480601.post-62542524199778639652010-07-03T23:45:00.000-05:002010-07-03T23:45:29.889-05:00Travel Alley's Shopping Center Grand OpeningToday is the grand opening of my online store. Well no need to go anywhere else to get the latest news, travel alley brings you up to the minute information. Check out the 5 changes here! Are you ready? Here goes...

Airport Security Update
Travelers, say good-bye to your plastic baggies and tiny bottles of shampoo. The 3-1-1 rule may be discontinued in 2009 as new X-ray technology is introduced at airports around the country. The new technology can detect differences between benign liquids such as hair gel or juice boxes and potentially dangerous liquids used in bombs.
The TSA expects to have as many as 900 machines in place by the end of the year, so the 3-1-1 rule will be phased out and eventually halted altogether in the near future.

Merger Mania
Late in October, Delta's proposed merger with Northwest was approved by the Department of Justice, and the airlines will enter full-blown merger mode in early 2009. The tie-up may not be fully complete until 2010, but you can expect Northwest's name and brand to be phased out in 2009. The SkyMiles and WorldPerks frequent flyer programs will be merged towards the end of this year. For up-to-date information, visit Delta's FAQ page.
Of course, there's always the possibility that the Delta/Northwest merger will spark other mergers. As a recent Reuters report predicted, "The answer is likely to be yes in an industry that clearly has excess capacity, is adding surcharges despite a retreat in fuel prices, and is facing international competitors that are expected to consolidate in the coming year.

Airlines Introduce A-La-Carte Pricing
Despite protests from travelers, American and Frontier are set to introduce a-la-carte pricing in 2009. As of the time of this writing, American had not announced full details of its new fare structure, although it may use Air Canada as a model. Stay tuned to our Today in Travel blog for details on American's new system later this year.
In December, Frontier announced details of its new AirFairs fare structure. Economy fares are bare-bones, no-frills tickets; Classic fares include seat assignments, checked bags, DirecTV, and frequent flyer miles; and Classic Plus tickets are fully refundable and changeable with lots of extras.
If these new ventures from Frontier and American prove successful, other airlines may adopt similar fare structures, similar to the avalanche of new fees introduced in 2008. Whether that will be a good thing for travelers remains to be seen.

In-Flight Internet Service Expands
Expect Internet access to be available on many more flights in 2009. American, Delta, and Virgin America all introduced Internet service on some flights in 2008, and will likely expand the service to more planes this year. Delta plans to add service to a new plane every few days, with the goal of outfitting all its aircraft with Internet by the end of the year, and will also begin to add the service to Northwest's planes.
Other airlines, including Air Canada, Alaska, and Southwest plan to test Internet service this year as well.

Paperless Boarding Passes
Paperless boarding passes are the wave of the future, and will become more widespread this year. You'll soon be able to download a boarding pass to your PDA or cell phone, and scan the bar code at an airport security checkpoint scanner, eliminating the need for a physical printout.
Continental was the first U.S. airline to test paperless boarding passes in late 2007, and has since expanded its Mobile Boarding Pass option for departures from Austin, Boston, Cleveland, Houston, New York's La Guardia airport, Newark, San Antonio, and both Reagan and National airports in Washington, D.C.
Other carriers, including Air Canada, Alaska, American, Delta, and Northwest, are also beginning to introduce paperless boarding options for travelers.

The number 5 change is amazing! However, I knew this would be a change that would quickly become a reality given the technology of today. My parents just came back from a trip and were amazed at the new x-ray technology being used at several airports that you actually walk through. It was fast and my father didn't have to go through all of the trouble he always goes through because of his knee replacements. He has a medical card and still has a big hassle each time he travels. Airport Security can physically see the replacements using the x-ray technology and it only took the amount of time of walking through the machine. Yes folks this is the new millennium! We the people have made this great day in history occur. My blog isn't normally political in content however, I felt very moved by the inauguration today and filled with joy. I believe that Barack Obama is the best person for the job as our leader and wanted to state so publicly! His great words have moved me throughout the entire campaign. Let us embrace change and rejoice with our new leader. Change spearheads growth, new ideas and is the foundation of our country. I would like to share my thoughts in a short reading and here I go!
Time is...change for a brighter day, Time is...long for those who wait, Time is...too short for those who sleep, but for those who rejoice, Time is...Eternity! Let us all rejoice for this wonderful day in history and join our new leader in the quest. Aside from it's romantic flavor, Athens is rich in history as well as breathtaking architecture. If you visit Athens, Greece there are 10 top things to do. Here are 3 of the top ten.

Acropolis-A splendid religious complex, the Acropolis consists of several temples, which were built by the world's first democracy during the 5th century BC. The most majestic building of all is the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. The Parthenon became the paragon of classical Greek architecture, and has suffered serious damage over the years. A small museum features an outstanding collection of ancient Greek sculptures.

Temple of Olympian Zeus-Begun in 515 BC, this huge temple was dedicated to the worship of Zeus. Its perimeter included 104 Corinthian columns, with additional columns inside the building that housed a huge gold and ivory statue of Zeus. After the temple's destruction by invaders in the 4th century AD, the marble from the ruins started to vanish as it was being used as building material for newer buildings. Nowadays, only some of the temple's columns can be seen. Their immense height is a testimony to the huge size of this sanctuary.

Ancient Angora-Socrates strolled through the Agora 2,500 years ago engaging people in long, philosophical discussions. This unique archaeological park served as the city's marketplace from the 6th century BC to the 6th century AD. Scattered throughout the Agora are statues and ruins of numerous buildings, the most interesting of which is the well-preserved Temple of Hephaistos or Thission, built in the 5th century BC. Many archaeological finds are on display inside the reconstructed Stoa Attalou, a majestic building from the 2nd century BC.

For your daily dose of travel, follow my blog! It's breathtaking along with it has many interesting historic landmarks. The Eiffel Tower is the most recognizable landmark in Paris and is known worldwide as the symbol of France. Named after its designer, Gustave Eiffel, it is a premier tourist destination, with over 5.5 million visitors per year. The tower received its 200,000,000th guest on November 28, 2002.

The structure was built from 1887-1889 as the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle (1889), a World's fair at the centennial celebration of the French revolution. It was inaugurated on March 31, 1889, and opened on May 6. 300 steel workers joined together 18,038 pieces of steel, using two and a half million rivets. Considering the safety standards in place at the time, it is remarkable that only one worker died in the construction of the tower, during the installation of the lifts (elevators).

The tower is 300 metres tall, (986 feet), not including the television antenna on top, which adds another 20 meters, and weighs over 10,000 tonnes (over 21,000,000 pounds). When it was built it was the highest structure in the World. Maintenance on the tower includes 50 tons of dark brown paint every 7 years. Depending on the ambient temperature, the Eiffel Tower will change height by several centimetres because of contraction and expansion of the metal.

Perhaps predictably, the tower met with resistance from the public when it was first built, many thought it would be an eyesore. Today it is widely considered to be one of the most striking pieces of architectural art in the world.
One of the great Hollywood movie clichés is that the view from a Parisian window always includes the Eiffel Tower. Originally, Eiffel had a permit to leave the tower standing for 20 years, but as it proved valuable for communication purposes, it was allowed to stay after the end of the permit.
